I make art for those who still feel the pulse of the land beneath their feet, so that its stories are never forgotten.
I draw animals not just as I see them, but as I feel them, raw, untamed, and honest. The animals I portray carry stories written in wind and dust, in strength that endures. My goal is to give those stories form, to let their spirit live on paper.

Freedom's Quiet Whisper
12" x 12" Nero pencil
Sometimes a piece begins with a feeling.
This drawing grew from quiet moments spent watching wild horses, those rare seconds when the wind stills, and all you see is the quiet whisper of freedom in their eyes. There’s something profoundly grounding about that strength paired with gentleness, and I wanted to capture that balance in pencil: the tousled mane, the soft light, the dignity in stillness.
As an artist, I often spend hours on a single drawing like this. It’s not just about getting every hair or muscle right; it’s about slowing down enough to really see. That’s something my art has taught me: patience, presence, and respect for the living spirit that exists in every creature I draw.
When I look at this piece now, it feels like a reflection of my own journey as an artist, learning to find peace amid motion and strength in the quiet places.
About Maria
Custom Portraits
My portraits are created for those who hold love close,
so that they will always have a beautiful reminder of the hearts that make their world whole.
There are stories that live in the wind, in the steady gaze of a wild horse, in the quiet dignity of creatures that move through our world unseen.
Maria D’Angelo listens for those stories and brings them to life in pencil and colored pencil so vivid, they seem to breathe.
A nationally celebrated artist, she is driven by a passion for capturing the unique essence of her subjects. Each piece is a conversation between strength and tenderness, between the wild and the familiar. Horses, wolves, bison, even the gentle eyes of a beloved pet, become vessels of something deeper: memory, spirit, love that endures.
Through every line and shadow, Maria captures what words cannot: the soul of the West, and the beauty of connection that never fades.
